Wellbeing at Work: Why It Matters at POD and Beyond

Introduction: A Culture of Care, Not Just Compliance

At POD, we believe that property management is about more than buildings. It’s about people. From concierges to senior leaders, our teams are the heartbeat of our business. That’s why we’ve made employee wellbeing a company-wide priority, not as a trend, but as a long-term commitment.

We’re proud to share how our approach to wellbeing is shaping a healthier, more engaged workforce, and why that matters to our clients, our industry, and our future.

Why We Started a Wellbeing Committee

Our Wellbeing Committee was born from a simple but powerful idea: when employees feel supported, they thrive. And so does the business.

The committee is made up of volunteers from across POD: concierges, property managers, central support, and leadership, reflecting the diversity of our workforce. Inclusive and proactive, it is a powerful platform for employee voice and a key influence in shaping the company’s wellbeing agenda.

Reflecting on the purpose and passion behind the committee, Elena Marian, Wellbeing Committee Co-Chair, shares her perspective on why wellbeing in the workplace matters and what inspired her to take on this role:

“As a Gen Z myself, I’ve seen firsthand how my generation prioritises mental health and wellbeing, and chooses workplaces that reflect their values. That drive doesn’t just benefit us, it inspires everyone across the company to expect more for their wellbeing.

The truth is, we spend a huge part of our lives at work - it should be a place where we feel respected, supported, and able to thrive. That’s why I wanted to start this committee. As a Talent Advisor, I see how deeply wellbeing connects to performance, culture, and retention - so leading this work is a natural extension of what we do in the Talent Team

I am very proud of my committee and the work we do, and I’m motivated by the change we are driving together.”

What the Committee Does, and Why It Matters

The committee’s mission is to champion mental health, physical wellness, and work-life balance. It listens, acts, and evolves based on employee feedback. From wellbeing check-ins and mental health resources to fun initiatives that boost morale, the committee is helping to embed wellbeing into our everyday culture.

As someone who knows the realities of night shift work firsthand, Paul Adekoya, Committee Co-Chair and Night Concierge, shares the challenges that underpin his dedication to the committee’s mission:

“Working night shifts as a concierge presents unique challenges that impact both physical and mental wellbeing. The disruption of natural sleep cycles can lead to fatigue, mood shifts, and health issues, especially when daytime rest is inconsistent.

Isolation is another challenge. With limited staff and fewer residents around, the quiet can feel lonely. As the sole point of contact, night staff often face high-pressure decisions without immediate support.

Security is a major concern. While most nights are uneventful, there’s always the risk of intruders, fire alarms, or distressed residents. I’ve personally faced threatening behaviour, including verbal and physical abuse, which had a lasting impact on my mental health. Managing such incidents while remaining calm and professional requires resilience, especially during back-to-back shifts.”

Paul’s experience shows why wellbeing isn’t just a “nice-to-have”. It’s essential. Paul further explains that support from team members, combined with his own initiative, have helped him manage stress:

“To stay grounded, I stick to structured routines, regular patrols, detailed logging of ticketing, key audit and parcel management and short breaks. Effective handovers with the day team also help maintain continuity and ensure our work is valued.”

Why Wellbeing Benefits Everyone, Including our Customers

For every £1 spent on supporting the mental health and wellbeing of their workforce, employers get on average £4.70 back in increased productivity.

Wellbeing isn’t just good for employees. It’s good for business.  At POD, we’ve seen how a wellbeing-focused culture leads to:

  • Higher staff retention: Employees who feel valued are more likely to stay.

  • Motivated teams: Engagement drives performance.

  • Better customer service: Happy staff create happy residents.

  • Resilience: Teams are better equipped to handle stress and pressure.

When our teams thrive, our residents feel it. From friendly greetings to quick responses, a positive workplace culture shines through in every interaction. Wellbeing isn’t just internal, it’s visible in the service we provide. Happy employees go the extra mile, and that leads to loyal residents, glowing reviews, and stronger communities.

Our recent Five Star Occupational Health and Safety audit, conducted by the British Safety Council, also recognised POD for its strong commitment to wellbeing, noting that POD “…is a company that places the welfare and wellbeing of their employees on the same priority level as the continued development and growth of the business. All personnel spoken to were effusive about the support given, positive management styles and engagement processes across the business.”

This external recognition, combined with the tangible benefits we see every day, from engaged, motivated teams to exceptional service for our residents, demonstrates that investing in employee wellbeing truly drives both people and business success.

Measuring Impact: How We Know It’s Working

Through staff surveys, feedback loops, and wellbeing check-ins, we monitor progress and adjust our approach accordingly. Since launching the committee, we’ve seen positive trends in retention, attendance, and tenant satisfaction. We celebrate wins, learn from challenges, and keep evolving.

Neglecting wellbeing, on the other hand, can have serious consequences: burnout and stress, high turnover, increased absenteeism, and a toxic workplace culture. These issues affect not just employees, but customers and overall business outcomes. That’s why we believe wellbeing must be a strategic priority, not just a reactive fix.

Summary: Our Commitment to Wellbeing

At POD, wellbeing is woven into our culture. It’s about real people, real support, and real impact.

We’re proud of what we’ve built, and we’re excited about what’s next. The Wellbeing Committee continues to grow, and our vision is clear: to set the gold standard for staff wellbeing in property management.
